Public Art Tour
Public art is a reflection of our community's history and identity. Community is more than the physical environment we inhabit. It includes the people and objects we interact with on a daily basis. Public art creates livable cities, educates and enriches the spirit and pride of our citizens. It strengthens economic development and tourism.
Our community shapes our identity and, in turn, we shape our community. The quality of our physical environment, from the buildings we create to the sidewalks we walk on, has a power to define our community, to transform our public spaces and create a meaningful sense of place.
Each year the City of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County set aside funds used to construct or renovate public buildings for public art. These projects make up the public art program. The public art program is administered by the Arts & Science Council. Artists from around the country are commissioned to create public art and are educating themselves in the process to produce art that speaks of the facility, history and the community.
The Charlotte Convention Center is the site of the first public art projects commissioned under the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Public Art Commission. Look around the Charlotte Convention Center to see works by several local artists along with pieces by nationally known artists.
